2 for 1 gift box/sets at Lush

I was browsing the mall while waiting to pick up my dad and I walked into Lush and what do I see there? 2 for 1 Christmas gift sets. If there are products you like and you could care less that the box has a little tag that has some Christmas cheer on it, I think it's a really great deal. I bought some for some friends who I know like their stuff. The best part is they come wrapped in nice looking wrapping paper!

In other news, I need to figure out what I am doing with my RRSPs for the year! I have finally decided that I have the savings cushion I wanted and that it is time to lock some money up till I retire years and years away. The thing is I don't know what to invest it. Mutual Funds? GICs? Stocks? bahh!

2010 is around the corner

The holidays seems to have come and almost gone. I am back at work for a few days before new years and then it's back to normal next week. These last few weeks of the year are almost the best for work because it's quieter and the drive in is bearable.

I took a little trip to the states & did a little shopping. It beats boxing day here. Some of my purchases included the Urban Decay Ammo Eye Palette which is good because it has all the colors I would use in one palette. The one bummer was the color I bought just a few weeks earlier at Winners is also in this palette.

I also bought the cutest frilly top at the Gap. All in all, I was quite the good girl. I spent most of my time sight seeing and spending time with the family. I think I'd have spent more going boxing day shopping here.

Up next, boots!

Good idea/Bad idea

Did anybody else grow up watching Animaniacs when they were younger? One of my favorite segments from that show was 'Good idea/Bad idea'! My Christmas bonus reminds me of it actually. Why? Because while it's awesome that I even got a bonus this year when there are companies out there not extending bonuses out to their employees, it's a major drag when 37% of it is deducted because of taxes! Yup, thirty effin seven percent!'

Ahh well...it's come at a good time because my December spending has been up the wazoo.

Entertainment Book 2010 Toronto

I decided to buy the 2010 Toronto edition of the Entertainment Book. It's a book full of coupons with about 50% or more consisting of 2 for 1 foody type coupons. I paid $20 minus a $3 rebate for shopping through greatcanadianrebates.ca, so a total of $17. I was on the fence about buying it before because I wasn't sure whether I'd be spending extra trying to use the coupons going to places I typically wouldn't or actually save money going about my regular purchases. With the new discounted price, I decided to give it a whirl.

I just got the book last week and after looking through it, I think it'll be a winner. I saw a few coupons for places I regularly go to such as discounted movie tix (though I can get them for the same price at CAA) and 2 for 1 dining at restaurants I normally go to. I think it's safe to say, I'll break even but now the question is will I save money? I am going to try and keep track of when I use the coupons and see how much I end up saving in 2010 and see if it was a worth while purchase.

Does anybody have any experiences with the massive amounts of money they saved with the book?

First snow fall...

It was wishful thinking to hope that the snow free days would last through December. The drive into work this morning wasn't too bad because I imagine lots of people are on holidays with the Christmas season close by. There are a ton of people at work taking days off because they can't carry over them over into 2010 so it's either use it or loose it! That's why I think the roads weren't as crammed as it could have been. The snow also turned into rain half way through my drive, making things easier. However when I got to my parking lot and trekked into the building, my socks & pants were soaked from snow getting into my shoes, reminding me that I still need a good pair of winter boots

Last year I debated investing in a good pair of boots. I ended up going through the winter freezing my little piggies because I never bought that pair. This winter, I am in the same spot thinking about a good pair of winter boots that will keep me warm & dry.

I still really like the North Face Hailey Boot below from last year retailing at a whopping $165!

A new favorite this year is also the North Face Payton boot retailing for $140.
I still can't stomach the retail prices for these even though reality is if I want warm + waterproof, I am going to need to bite the bullet. The plan for the moment is to hold off for a few more weeks and see if I can get them in the US when I am there for the holidays. I am crossing my fingers for my wallet & toes.

Urban Decay at your local Winners!

I haven't posted in almost a month! Life's been throwing me things I didn't necessairly want to blog about to the whole world so I decided to take a break. Well the original break was going to be a week and that suddenly turned into weeks. It's like anything with life, once you fall out of the habit, it's a little hard to get back into it.

Now back to my regularly scheduled post. I was at Winners today and what did I see in the makeup section? Urban Decay eyeshadows for $4.99! These little guys retail for $16 at your local Sephora so it's a steal if you are able to get them at Winners. The only thing is the selection was small. I got Chains which is the colour pictured right. They also had some green colour that was not for me.

I plan on stopping by more often to see if they change their colours because at $5, it's even cheaper than most drugstore eyeshadows. They also had some Two Faced lip stuff, Bare Essential kits and Eco Tools brushes at good prices but none of those interested me.

Benzaclin update

So I've been using benzaclin for under a week and I've noticed a difference. It's diminished some of the existing acne and prevented a million new guys from popping up. It feels like a small victory but I am still skeptical. I've read reviews that after using it for a while, the product looses effectiveness so that's once concern. I am also concerned that this product is harsh and I am not sure what damage I am doing to the skin long term.

I am going to keep going for a month before I make my final decision. The ideal result is that this helps keep my acne down and I get to a point where I would only have to spot tread. A girl can dream right?

BenzaClin

I have acne. I've tried just about every drugstore/online product known to man and I've had it! So today while at the doctors for something else unrelated to acne, I figured I'd ask if there was anything that he could prescribe for the acne. Lo and behold I've been prescribed BenzaClin.

Cross your fingers folks because I am at wits end. I thought I had my acne under control and for the last few months, it's been crazy. White heads, inflamed cysts, you name it. I cringe when I look in the mirror because there's acne and then there's also scars left behind from acne. Not a pretty picture and I've even stopped wearing make up *gasp* because I thought it might be making it worse!

So despite it containing benzol peroxide, I am giving er a go.

Clorox Green Works Review + Do your own laundry!

I was excited when I found out I was a lucky blogger chosen to review a natural laundry detergent from Clorox Green Works because I have sensitive skin and always wondered if going natural would tone down the breakouts. I am not hardcore green but would say I am more so than your average person. Half the products I use are free of harsh chemicals.

So what is Clorox Green Works?
A range of cleaning products from laundry detergent to household cleaners made with natural plant and mineral-based biodegradable cleaning ingredients. Sweet right? I read the ingredient list for the products I received and they seemed semi natural. I can't comment on all the ingredients because I didn't know what they were but there were no ingredients ending in hydroxoplaneaxe so that was a good sign.

How does it clean?
I did my first load with it last weekend and am happy to say it cleaned all my clothes. I also didn't use any softener because I am silly and forgot it but am happy to report that my clothes came out nice and soft. I could be biased but I also found the smell to be pleasant and didn't have that long lingering smell so many other detergents have. It could be because I was using too much detergent before and used the right amount this time around. Who knows?

The verdict?
I liked it but @ a regular price of ~$8 I am not sure I'd make the switch. I'll go through the whole bottle and see if I feel differently at the end but the price is holding me back.

Wanna do your own laundry the natural way?
I have some free product coupons to give out to other Canadians. Leave a comment and I'll pick two people next weekend to send the coupons to. All I ask is that you write up a review either in your blog or send me an email with it.

Happy Halloween!

It's here! Normally I love Halloween but this year I sadly have no plans except for staying indoors & possibly handing out candy. I might try & watch a scary movie but other than that, nada.

I think I will try to take advantage of discounted candy tomorrow though. Shoppers Drug Mart, look out!

Keeping my ass warm....

With sub zero temperatures around the corner I am thinking about getting a heated seat cushion/cover for my car. I get cold fast....really fast! In fact most days I already have the heat going when I am driving!

The thing is there are so many of them! Who knew? And some of the items have gotten really bad reviews on the Canadian Tire website. Even expensive ones that you might assume were good quality because of the price point. So I have no idea what to get and what a reasonable price to spend on them is. My requirements are that it has to warm up fast and that it lasts. If I am going to spend the money, I don't want it to die on me after one season.

Canadian Tire has this one on sale from $90 to $20 but the reviews have turned me off. I wonder where else I can buy them instead of Canadian Tire. I might check out the auto area in Walmart later this week and see what they have.

How is everybody coping with the cell phone ban?

The ban began yesterday and it is now officially illegal to use your phone to talk, text or email unless using a hands free device to do so. Police will be lenient the first you months and let you off the hook but starting February you could face fines up to $500!

I have a headset that I try to use. If I know I am going to be calling somebody when I get in the car, I automatically put it on. Where I get into trouble is if somebody calls while I am driving and I don't have the headset in place. I think it's more dangerous trying to get it on while driving because my headset is a pair of headphones similar to those you would use with your ipod. It would probably be more distracted trying to untangle the wires than putting somebody on speaker and using the phone.

I am all for removing distracted drivers off the road but I am not sure cell phones are the entire problem though they certainly contribute. How about those people who eat, put make up on, shave, etc while driving? I know I am guilty of the eating one but sometimes I just can't resist!

Cougar Town

Yesterday I wasn't feeling so great so I stayed indoors under a warm blanket for practically the whole night watching free tv shows from Rogers On Demand.

One of the shows they had on the list was Cougar Town. I've never seen it before and had nothing better to do so I gave it a whirl. Wikipedia says 'The series focuses on a recently divorced woman who reenters a dating scene filled with younger men while living with her 17-year old son and embarks on a journey to self-discovery while surrounded by fellow divorcees.'

Well I ended up watching all 5 episodes that were available! It's funny & I LOLed lots because it's my kind of humor. As I was watching it, I kept thinking how much it reminded me of scrubs. Especially Jules (Courtney Cox) neighbor, whose personality is almost a replica of the janitor from Scrubs. I just did some googling and sure enough the two shows are from the same creator. So if you liked scrubs, I encourage you to check out Cougar Town.

What new shows have you been watching? With the weather getting cold, I want more shows to watch!

Work Health Benefits

On my lovely work pay stub every month, there's a deduction for health benefits. I've always thought, 'Gah, why am I spending money on something I don't use'. I have one of those not so fancy smancy health benefits where I don't get free massages, ect. All you people with free massages, I am jealous I tell ya! But I do get 100% coverage on prescriptions and boy am I glad I do.

In the 2+ years I've worked there, I've never had to make a claim ever and then bam, in the matter of 2 months, I've been in & out of the doctors office & racked up ~$100 in prescriptions. And I see more in the not too distant future. Suddenly I am appreciative of my benefits.

LG Fashion Week 2009

LG Fashion Week in Toronto starts tomorrow and I am hoping to catch some of the festivities later on in the week. I was walking by the venue today and I saw Jason Meyers from Project Runways Canada season 2! We were both waiting for the light to turn green....I felt silly going up to him and saying 'Hi' so I just watched from a distance. I am assuming he has a show this week and was doing rehearsals because he and his friends were carrying clothing & shoes & laundry bags, ect.

My favorite Project Runway designer is still Evan Biddell from season 1 though....

Lusting for a New Phone

I kind of want a new cell phone. Well, what's wrong with my current one? Nothing! Occasionally it'll cut out and that's annoying but it's definitely something I can deal with. The cutting out happens once out of ten calls, maybe even less and I have call display so I can just call the person right back.

I just have phone envy when I see people with their slick iphones and blackberries and lust for one too. The only thing is, I am not willing to spend >$100 on a new phone so I just keep lusting...

Canadian Dollar

I am getting excited at the performance of the Canadian dollar. Why? Because I want to buy some US stocks.

I dabble very little in stocks. Just for fun & my knowledge. It is by no means meant to be my main retirement funds and god forbid if I lost it, I would be very upset but I would also survive.

It was actually around the time I started dabbling that I decided to start this blog so I could learn more. Well I've been monitoring some US stocks for a while but I've always held off because of the lousy conversion rate. Now that the dollar is performing better, I am toying with the idea of buying some US stocks. The thing is do I wait or buy now?

Waistline struggles

So I gained weight when I went on my trip earlier this summer. 10lbs in fact! The thing was, I figured I went a little out of control on the trip and that everything would go back to normal shortly after returning. Well the truth is, I've been struggling and I am not entirely sure why!

I went back to my old routine of doing yoga and eating normal meals instead of the pigging out I was doing on the trip yet nothing happened. In fact, I just checked my weight and I gained another 5lbs! I knew it was bad when I put on my jeans yesterday and I was uncomfortable because it was so tight. These are jeans that I've fit into for years. I still fit into them but I now have this lovely muffin top thing happening where I have fat sticking out over the jeans. Not a pretty sight!

So I've decided that by Christmas time, I want to loose 5lbs. My stretch goal is to loose 10lbs. It may not seem like a lot but it makes a huge difference on my body. Remember what Hillary Duff looked like with 15 extra pounds. Well she's like my body twin and I can tell you it makes huge difference.

How am I going to do this? I want to add one additional workout per week on top of what I am doing till I get to where I want to be. I also want to try being healthier. I am semi healthy in that I get my intake of veggies & whatnot. However, I can't say no to indulgences i.e. cake, chips...you name it. It's unrealistic for me to say that I'll be strict and not eat any of these things but the key for me will be eating it in moderation.

Costa Blanca Goodness

Seems like all I've been spending money on lately besides food is clothes! I guess it's the change in seasons that's got me riled up. Fall is my favorite season, along with spring. I don't like it when it's too hot or too cold.

So little old me was at the mall and what do I spot? 40% off everything at Costa Blanca! I have no shame, I am a Costa Blanca fan! Lots of people group them with UB, Sirens, Suzy Shier ect. but I find that their quality and style is often better. You can find Costa Blanca scattered throughout my wardrobe when it comes to tops: cardigans, shirts, long sleeved tops, sweater vests...you name it. Bottoms however are a different story as I find their pants are flimsy and not great quality. Maybe things have changed but I typically don't even bother trying them on. I have a few cardigans from Jacob and I would pick the Costa Blanca ones in my closet over the Jacob ones any day. They have also stood the test of time. The Jacob ones started out strong but after lots of washes, it looks dull and out of shape unlike the Costa Blanca ones which still looks new.

The 40% is only off regular priced items which I didn't realize till I took my items up to the cashier. I bought a regular priced wrap around ($17), a shirt (on sale for $9) and flats (on sale for $20) that I've had my eye on for a while. All in all, I am a happy girl.

Costco Girls Bomber Jackets

Went to costco today to pick up some medication. If you don't know, they have cheaper dispensing rates so the meds work out to be slightly cheaper than if I had gone to Shoppers for example. I was given a 20minute wait time to come back and pick up my meds so off I went to browse the store....

I like costco because their quality is typically great and also because you never know what hidden gems you'll discover. I am a big fan of their Tuff Athletics line for yoga pants and also if you don't know they're having a great deal on Heys Bags right now. My family ended up buying 3 bags! We orignally bought one over the weekend, loved the deal so much that we went back and bought two more. Check out this post at Listen To Lena if you want more details.

Anyhoos back to my browsing. Their girls bomber jacket similar to what's pictured above is on sale for $20 and I couldn't resist having a casual fall jacket to wear. I mean it's not something I'd wear to the office but for the weekend or just being casual, it's perfect. It's a girls jackets and either girls have gotten bigger or I've gotten tinier but I had no problems fitting into the jacket and in fact, I actually didn't get the largest size possible because it was too big for me!

H&M Hobo Bag

So I went a little overboard with the shopping yesterday. This is what happens when you have 3 hours to kill and you're in a mall. I bought a bunch of things but the highlight was my purse from H&M.

It's a Hobo type bag and I love it! The length is adjustable so I can make it shorter for a more formal look and long to take it easy and casual. The picture on the left are Nine West bags but it's the closest picture I could find online to how mine looks. I've been on the lookout for a larger purse/bag for quite some time now. I like my current purse/bag but it's not big enough for all my goodies. i.e. if I decide to carry a waterbottle w/ me or a book to read on the subway. So I decided it was time to upgrade. I went into store after store trying on purse after purse with no luck. I came really close to purchasing something at Aldo but something about their bulkiness turned me off. I want something big but not something ginormous. I found something that I was semi happy with at Le Chateau and it was on sale for half off @ $50 so I bought it. Then I went into H&M which was my last stop and low and behold there's the purse I needed. And only one left in grey! I don't know why but I get a kick out of purchasing the last item of a size or colour. I laugh to myself that nobody else will have it....from that store anyways.

So I promptly purchased the H&M purse @ $35 and returned the Le Chateau one that I was never really satisfied with and saved myself $10. I am just a little concerned about the material. I don't know how long it'll last but I am willing to give it a chance. I was willing to pay a few hundred dollars for a good quality purse but the high end stores left me disappointed. There was a Marc Jacobs hobo bag I saw online I thought about getting but I really wanted something to try on and see for myself and was why I ended up going with the H&M one.

I am crossing my fingers that this lasts. I've been using my current purse for 2+ years.

Do you know what I can't wait for?

THE HILLS! It's one of my favorite shows and Kristin Cavallari is the new star this season which means drama! I love it. I hardly care to watch for trailers but if you're a hills fan, go to mtv.ca right now and watch the trailer. Go!

It's lame but I feel like schools about to start in a week and I am going to be reunited with my school friends.

Ok, I am off to watch the interviews now....

MIA

I've been out of action lately. There have been days where I come home and don't even turn my computer on! This is very unlike me but I feel like I've been productive.

I've also been spending lots of money mostly on eating out because sometimes I am still on the road and dinner time strikes. I've been trying my best to make wise choices both in the cash & nutrition side. The sucky thing is I haven't been keeping track of my finances this month in my little spread sheet so I have no idea how over or under budget I am. I imagine over but not totally sure.

I had poutine at New York fries the other day and I don't know if my tastes buds have changed but it honestly was not that great and it cost about $5! New York Fries always leaves me disappointed. You'd think they'd have fries nailed down considering it's their specialty but no.

U2 360° Tour

I went to the U2 concert last week at the Skydome! It was a great venue and the skydome was open the whole time. I wished the weather was a little warmer and it would've been perfect. ~$100 well spent.

SDM Quo Atomizer Update

I bought a Quo Atomizer at Shoppers Drug Mart maybe a little over a month ago only to have it stop working a few weeks after purchasing it! Craptacular!

I had a chance to stop in at SDM today to see if I could get it exchanged or get my money back. The lady at the cosmetics department was super nice and talked to her manager about it. She was able to exchange it for another one, no problem. It helped that I brought the defective one in. After lots of pushing and twisting, she got maybe a drop to come out. Definitely not what it's supposed to do.

I am hoping this one doesn't crap out on me and I can use it for years to come. It really is cute.

I am a fattie!

So by chance, I noticed that our local Costco was holding a free information session on Body Mass Index (BMI) and body fat percentage. I dragged my mom who has a membership and went. There was a lovely nurse who explained what BMI and body fat % is and also did some tests and calculations to see where I fall.

The results? Dun, dun, dun....I am at a good BMI! See the little chart on the left? Well I am in the green range at a healthy weight. However, my body fat % is 27.5% which a little high for some one with my stats. Ideally, I should be in the 21-24% range.

The key for me will be watching my food intake. I think I have the exercise part down but can't say no to anything sweet and anything fried or anything sweet that's fried (i.e. deep fried mars bars!).

Labour Day Weekend

What a great weekend. I did a mini road trip with the bf and it was great. Lots of fun and sun. Corny right? But I love all things cheesy and corny.

Now that I am back, I am trying to get things done for work as I have something I am working on for the majority of the week leaving hardly any time for anything else that comes up.

I hope everybody else had a great long weekend.

Shoppers Drug Mart: You've let me down

So I bought a Quo atomizer spray thingamabob from Shoppers Drug Mart about a month ago. I made my own home made Fix+ that I spray on my face before applying mineral makeup and wanted something compact and cute to use. Who wouldn't want to spray their face with this instead of some tacky plastic bottle. I figured a one time investment for something I could use forever. Well I tried using it last week & it didn't work!! No spraying, nothing! And I've tried everything, using hot water, using different liquids, ect. And no dice!

I think I may try taking it back to shoppers drug mart to see if they'll exchange it for me despite not having a receipt for it. I mean less than a month is ridiculous and I am pretty sure I paid more than it's worth for it.

I hate paying 5c for bags

OK, do you know what I still struggle with? Bringing bags with me to the mall to avoid paying the 5c. It's second nature for me to take extra bags with me when I go grocery shopping because I am there with the intention of buying something. But at the mall, it's very hit or miss. Sometimes, I am just window shopping, sometimes I just think of something that I need to pick up on my way home, ect. I never think to take a bag out of my trunk and take it with me into the mall.

I was at Zellers recently and purchased one of their reusable fold-able bags and I love it. It was a only a dollar and the best part is it folds up into this tiny little thing that you can just throw into your purse. I am not sure it's the best to take grocery shopping (i.e. I don't know how much weight it can support) but this is meant to be used for light weight things, not to carry things from Home Depot.

So now I am always ready. I know it's only 5c but paying for a bag bothers me.

Long weekend plans

The long weekend is still two weeks away but I've been itching to do something a little bigger than my past long weekends....like a road trip! So after lots of hmming & hawing, I booked a car for the long weekend with Enterprise. They had the best deal I could find which coupled with 10% off coupon from my entertainment book came to under $100 for 4 days! That's about $25/day to rent the car not including gas off course.

Now, I need a place to go. I wanted to get the car thing out of the way in case they sold out seeing as it is the long weekend after all. I am flexible on where to go. Typically me & the bf head to Montreal @least once a year and we have not yet done that this year so that's our back up. I am going to keep my eyes open for hotel deals and will see if anything else comes up.

Roots = No, Jacob = Yes

Remember my post about Roots Yoga and not being sure if they still exist as I couldn't find the line on their corporate website... however, I found out they have their own yoga studio :S Well on my way home from work yesterday I stopped by the Roots outlet hoping that if they were phasing their yoga clothing out, I could find stock at their outlets. Well no success and the employee tells me the line is still being sold at corporate stores. Not only were there no yoga clothes at the outlet, the prices on their clothing weren't that great to be honest.

I also ducked into the Jacob Outlet store because they occasionally have amazing deals (i.e. 50% off entire store multiple times a year). Well no 50% off this time but great prices like it was pretty much 50% off. I was able to score two button up work shirts @ $10, a tank top @ $5 and a tube top @ $5. I really love the tube top because it's one of those flowy tube tops that you can wear with jeans for a casual look or with a cardigan for a more dressy look. Awesome because I love double duty clothing. If you have an outlet near you, I'd recommend dropping by. They had other great deals on baby ts, dress pants, dresses, jackets....you name it but I really don't need any of those things.

My button up shirt collection is fairly small as I typically only wear them when I have a client meeting and I need to dress corporate and snazzy all at the same time.

Skidless by Yogitoes - Yikes, I just spent $60 on a towel!

The facts are:

1. I practice yoga....I like yoga...I love yoga.
2. I sweat....I sweat a lot....In fact I have hyperhidrosis.

Sweating while doing yoga is normal but leads to potential slipping and sliding. It sucks when the worry of sliding out of a position is in your head when you're supposed to be thinking deep yoda like thoughts. My solution has been bringing a small hand towel to class and wiping my hands and feet every so often. It's not the best but does the job.

Well lately the weather has been hot & humid and my sweating is in overdrive so I googled to see what could help me. That's when I stumbled across something called skidless which is an absorbent microfibre like towel the size of a yoga mat that you place on top of your mat. It has silicone nubs on one side so it grips on to your yoga mat and as a result prevents slipping & sliding and best of all it absorbs sweat which I do a lot of!

Exactly what the doctor ordered. Even better is that's it's got amazing reviews online. I did not find one single negative review about this product. Not one! Normally you come across somebody that feels so-so but I searched and searched and couldn't find unhappy customers. It could be due to the fact that it is still relatively unknown except in yoga circles and is only a matter of time before it becomes mainstream. And we all know that going mainstream will surely bring out some naysayers.

Now the trouble was finding it locally. It was already expensive as it is and I didn't want to spend more on shipping so I spent more time googling and discovered some local studios that carried it, along with Lululemon. Lululemon was the most accesible so I stopped by the store on my way home and picked one up. It was ~$60 with tax but if it does what it promises, I would have easily paid more.

I tried it out as soon as I got home and I am in love. It works great and what's best is that it's machine washable. You don't know how many times I wonder what kind of bacteria is getting on my face from my mat when doing a pose that requires my face to come into contact with the mat. *shudder*

Roots Yoga

I went out looking for a gift for a friends baby and ended up splurging on a Roots Yoga jacket at the Sears Outlet! It actually was very reasonably priced @ $30 whereas the original price was $80. I was on the fence but I tried it on and it fit like a dream and the colour was stunning. To top it off, they had a scratch & save event and I scored 10% off my purchase.

There was a point in my life where I'd buy things just for the brand or that little logo in the corner but I am over it. I am all about quality over quantity. And I think quality is really important for workout gear. i.e. for those looking for quality yoga gear on the cheap, check out costco. Their Tuff Athletics branded yoga gear has served me well. I can also attest to Roots. I went on their website and was a little confused because I couldn't find their yoga clothes! What confused me even more is there's a Roots Yoga Studio downtown toronto. :S Does this mean that they are phasing out their yoga clothes or perhaps they already did?

Next up in my yoga clothing adventures is Lululemon. I've stayed away from this brand because of the price but people say it's worth it. One of these days I think I am going to give in and try them out.

Phew all this yoga talk is making me want to do some yoga.

Trouble sleeping

Lately I've been struggling to fall asleep. I have a lot of things racing through my mind lately and that's what's been keeping me up. What's worse is I wake up early...and I mean early! I get up before my alarm goes off and that pretty much never happens. If you ask the bf, he'll tell you that if there's one thing I love to do, it's sleep.

It also doesn't help that the weather is sticky gross lately. I dig hot weather but humidity is not my friend. My hair feels the same way.

Back to my mind racing. It's been racing with thoughts of work and stresses of work. I think it's a toxic environment for my personality and a change of pace is in order. Now how quickly that change will happen is a different story but at least I am on it.

Why I made the switch to stainless steel

I know that this whole BPA controversy with water bottles happened last year but I am only acting up on it now. Why? There are two reasons. 1) I've been drinking from these water bottles for years & I think I am still relatively healthy. You know the old saying, if it aint broke, don't fix it. Well I am trying to be more conscious of what I am putting into my body so that's why I am acting up now. 2) I always keep a water bottle in the car that I drink from and with the summer in tow, it can't be good that I am drinking water from a bottle that's been heated from sitting out in the sun and is probably in overdrive leaking BPA and other things into the water that I drink.

Bisphenol-A or BPA for short is like a female hormone (estrogen) and has been linked to reproductive and developmental damage. Even breast cancer in women and prostate cancer in men! Research suggests that it could be linked to many other things as well but I think you could research anything to death and link just about anything together so make your own informed decision. My decision was that it was time for me to get a new water bottle.

So I did a little googling and here is what I found.
  1. BPA free plastic:
Manufacturers have now come out with plastic bottles that are BPA free. The big controversy that continues with these types of bottles are, are these bottles leaking something else into the water that tests just haven't discovered yet? I mean how long did it take to discover this whole BPA shebang? With that in mind, I am steering away from plastic bottles.

  2. Aluminum:
Sigg is the most popular bottle that's out there. It's almost the new Nalgene. However, I don't know if it's the best option. Siggs aluminum bottles and pretty much all other aluminum bottles made by other manufacturers are lined with plastic so it's safe to drink but people are questioning whether the lining is leaking harmful chemicals into the water. And we're back at square one. The other issue is that the aluminum could somehow leak into the water and cause another set of effects on the body. Hey it's been linked to Alzheimers! Very confusing! Sigg off course states that their bottles are very safe based on research studies but my personal decision is to stay away from aluminum.

  3. Stainless steel:
Based on my research this seemed like the best option for me. As long as it's a good composition of stainless steel it seems like it's OK to drink out of. My googling suggested making sure your stainless steel bottle is grade 304 (food grade) or else it might contain a high composition of nickel which isn't good for you and has again been linked to doing bad things for your body.

  4. Glass:
This actually seems like one of the best options if you're overly concerned about what you're drinking out of. It's also one of the cheaper options because all you have to do is buy a product that comes in a glass bottle (i.e. Snapple) and once you finish consuming, clean it and you're good to go. The big down side is convenience. i.e. it's fairly heavy and if you drop it, watch out! However, if you're a fairly un-clumsy person (definitely not me) or just keep your bottle in one area, this might be best for you. I am trying to remember the next time I use one, to save it & use in the car.

See, this water bottle stuff is serious business! I bought my stainless steel water bottle at Canadian Tire because they were on sale and because I had Canadian Tire money from pumping gas at their stations. At the end, I ended up paying about a $1 out of my pocket.

I did my own research and came to my own conclusions, I'd suggest everybody else do the same and do what they feel safe with.

Clothing Swap in Toronto

So I was doing my typical surfing and came across this event happening in Toronto this Saturday. Basically you pay an entrance fee, bring in some clothes you don't wear anymore and swap it for something else you do want.

It seems like such a great idea and while I don't know where the money is going to, I imagine it's for a good cause? I am actually debating heading down. We'll see if other plans come through for Saturday.

July 2009 Spending Recap

I've been a little hesitant to do a recap for July because I knew I was over early on in the month. Looking back, I found that I didn't think too much about going over budget and if I wanted something within reason, I gave in and bought it.
  • Clothes & Beauty: Budgeted: $100 Actual Spend: $169. I purchased my makeup for little over $100 with shipping and duties but I have no regrets. I expect my foundation to last for another year and the blushes to last forever. I also spent some money thrifting and impulsively at Ardene. I purchased earrings I didn't need, wore them a few times and have since forgotten about them. I am putting them up on my earring rack so atleast I see them and will be more inclined to wear them. I also spent some moola thrifting.
  • Eating out: Budgeted: $150, Actual Spend: $189. Over by approximately $40. I blame the bf but that's not really an excuse. We've been spending our fair time eating out this month on top of my normal eating out with friends. Add in a friends birthday where I pick up their tab because I refuse to let friends pay for food on their birthday and there you have it.
  • Entertainment: Budgeted: $25, Actual Spend: $24. This covered tickets for Second City and movie tickets for Bruno. Second City was great and worth every penny. Bruno was not.
  • Gas: Budgeted: $125, Actual Spend: $99. Don't think I drove any more than usual.
  • Groceries: Budgeted: $100, Actual Spend: $92. Not much to say here except that I tried out a new recipe this month that's a keeper.
  • Misc: Budgeted: $20, Actual Spend: $35. I purchased three things here, batteries, wires and a folder. All things that I needed.
  • Total Budgeted: $520, Actual Spend: $608! Over by $88.
A little disappointing that I didn't foresee my spending a little better. I thought I had accommodated for my huge splurge in makeup but looks like I still went a little crazy in the beauty category.

For August, I am going to make my budget $500 because I like nice round numbers. I am also going to increase my eating out budget while decreasing my beauty budget because there's no reason for me to go crazy buying makeup again.

It's the long weekend!

I also took today off in addition to the Monday we're getting of for a nice relaxing 4 day weekend. Take that! Despite not having crazy plans like going to a cottage or Las Vegas, I feel productive. Today, I met with some people, am making a move on changes in my life (hopefully I'll write more about that later), went to the mall and didn't buy a thing. Actually I purchased some mall sushi for lunch but I've been doing a million things lately, I felt like I deserved a treat and better that than a coach bag. Seriously there was a Coach store and I was tempted to walk in and possibly walk out with a purse.

Sometimes I tell myself that if I accomplish a goal I can reward myself to motivate me to get my ass into gear for that goal. i.e. Loose 20lbs and you can buy yourself earrings. I know some psychiatrist out there would tell me this is bad & blah, blah, blah but it works and I have no problems doing it. In fact, when I was a kid my parents would give me money or treat me to food if I scored As in school. Maybe that's where I got it from.

Woo! I am a winner!

So remember Gingers contest for a the Bombay Sapphire mixology kit? Well I won! Woo! What's even better is that they delivered the prize within a few hours of me sending them my shipping info. I came home to find this little box waiting for me.

It's safe to say, I am going to crack this out over the long weekend and enjoy some drinks. I also love that this has a lemon squeezer. I make fresh lemonade a few times a month so my hands thank you as well as my stomach.

Protein Packed

I did my grocery shopping at Oriental Mart over the weekend. It's like T&T, only cheaper. If I plan on cooking something soon after purchasing it, Oriental Mart is a safe bet. I find that veggies and fruits are sometimes half the price of a Food Basics/No Frills! The only thing is, I find that their produce spoils faster than your stuff bought at the grocerry stores. No biggie if you're planning on using up your produce soon.

I used a bunch of it tonight and tried something new. I modeled it after the Tofu and Veggies in Peanut Sauce recipe here. I first steamed some broccoli, beans, red peppers, carrots and mushrooms in my steamer. While that was cooking, I pan fried some tofu with garlic and ginger. My sauce was veggie broth, with a healthy dash of soy sauce, two generous spoonfuls of natural peanut butter and some hot sauce. I combined everything and that was it!

I know it sounds simple but it was delicious. If you have the time, try out the recipe. You will not be disappointed if you like stirfry type dishes. I am looking forward to lunch tomorrow.

Selling dresses online

I buy dresses with good intentions. I figure I'll wear them eventually but realistically there are only a few months of the year I can wear them. Even then, except for the casual cottony dresses, I feel like I am trying too hard wearing a dress. Inevitably what happens is, these dresses end up sitting in my closet for years being neglected. So I decided to see if I could sell them, even some that are completely brand new. If I can get back close to what I paid for the new dresses, then awesome or else half will return to my closet and other other half will be off to the salvation army.

I've gone through my dresses purchased over the last few years, taken pictures of about 15 dresses and uploaded them online. The thing is, I am not sure where to put them up. Craigslist? Ebay? Blog? Does anybody have any tips for selling clothes or is this something I shouldn't bother with?

Anyhoos, if they don't sell, then no loss and I actually rediscovered some favorites I had forgotten about! I guess I am trying not to get my hopes up.

Get your drink on with Gingers help

Everybody knows Ginger is back but did you know that she still has great contests going on? This one is for a Bombay Sapphire Mixology Kit. The kit comes with a collins glass, lemon squeezer, bar spoon and strainer.

I am a sucker for these kinds of kits. I am not a hardcore drinker anymore but I still enjoy novelty drinking accessories. Gone are the days of getting drunk at least once a week and waking up with no hangovers. Ahh, university, how fun and carefree you were!

Now that I am all grown up, I class it up by trying to drink mixed drinks instead of something on the rocks.

My EDM Package is here!

My makeup from Everyday Minerals is at the post office waiting for me! Gah, how silly is it that I am excited to go pick it up! I did get dinged customs for $15 but still totally worth it. Also perfect timing because I probably only have about a weeks worth of foundation left.

I also updated my side bars. Everything's on track but upcoming expenses include unscheduled car repairs which will throw me over the top :(

I learned a very important lesson

Lesson of the day: Just because you're good at something doesn't mean that's what you should be doing. The only thing is, I have no idea what I want to do and how to discover that thing that sets a fire under my but. That thing that I wake up wanting to do & go to bed thinking about. :S

New Credit Card in Town

I just got a new credit card in the mail. It's the MBNA Smart Cash MasterCard. You get 3% cash back at gas and grocery locations and 1% cash back at all other retail locations. It's great because my current go-to card is my amex for which I get up to 2% cash back.

The plan is to use the Smart Cash MasterCard whenever I buy gas/groceries and my Amex everywhere else. If anybody is interested, there's a huge thread on redflagdeals about it.

I bought my everday minerals makeup!

I just updated my budget bars and I am already over in my makeup category because I just bought my everyday minerals makeup online. It came out to $92 with shipping but I think I have about 12 items in there and totally worth it because it doesn't break me out. I also think customs might ding me too because the last time I bought around this much, I remember having to pay a fee. The good news is I have enough foundation to last me another year and probably enough blush for a lifetime.

I've learned to curb my clothing purchases but now it looks like I just transferred it to makeup. Sometimes I put on eye makeup before bed to only take it right off after applying it. It's hard to not want to play with it when you don't have an excuse to wear dramatic makeup on a daily basis. My normal makeup routine is pretty standard and neutral. Plus I don't have time in the morning to go beyond the foundation and mascara/eye liner.

Miscellany

  • I've been trying to run outside regularly now that summer is here and I really don't know how people can stick to the same route every single time. I like to spice things up and find that I can run longer if it's somewhere I haven't been before. But I've been keeping up with running outside at least once a week so go me!
  • My last post and what's been happening lately at work has made me realize a few things and I am trying to really force myself to come up with some idea of where I want to be career wise.
  • What's up with summerlicious? I think I would pay the same ordering off the menu because 1) I am vegetarian and 2) I probably don't need both an appetizer and dessert. I remember when summerlicious first started, it seemed like a great deal but it seems like the prices have gone up or maybe I just got cheaper....I think it's the first one
  • I am thinking of purchasing a GHD straightener later this year. I love my sedu one but I always want better.
  • Life's busy & not with things I want to be busy with
  • The weather sucks but I heard on the radio that we've been averaging about the same as last year. Really?

Dealing with clients suck sometimes

I know I've complained about this very thing before but it sucks having to work with clients who expect you to bend over backwards for them. Um, hi, you're not my only client and trying to be pushy and threatening me isn't going to get you anywhere. If anything I am going to want to play hard ball with you just because you're being an ass.

mmmkay

Summer makeup routine ..simplified

I wear sunscreen with an SPF of 45 and made sure it blocks both UVA and UVB rays. Even with all that sunscreen, I've still managed to turn a few shades darker. And I secretly like it because it's harder to notice my acne scars and that means I don't need to spend as much time covering them up. My normal routine consists of applying concealer on my scars followed by foundation. Nowadays, I can get away with just foundation.

On my way to work the other day, the lady in front of me was applying eye liner in her car! I mean we were waiting for a left turn and all but seemed a bit much. I am glad my routine isn't so extensive that it has me multitasking too much while I am driving.

Ginger is back!

Before I started blogging, there were a few blogs that were part of my must read and Gingers blog was one of them. Her blog was also one of the many personal finance blogs that inspired me to start my own blog. I sound like such a groupie but it’s the truth.

I am very happy she’s back and even happier she’s got great contests going on for everybody to participate in. You should definitely check it out.

June 2009 Spending Recap

I hope everybody had a great Canada day. I've heard lots of people complain about the fact that it fell on a Wednesday this year but I loved it. I felt like it gave me a boost and I was rearing to go today!

Looking back, I am proud I can finally say this but I came in under budget for once! WOO!
  • Clothes & Beauty: Budgeted: $50 Actual Spend: $28. I actually bought a few clothes but at great deals. i.e. $3 Graphic Ts at Old Navy, $10 tops at The Bay during their Bay Days. I even bought a tshirt for the bf within that $28.
  • Eating out: Budgeted: $150, Actual Spend: $128. I probably would have gone over had I not done a few BBQs instead of eating out at restaurants with friends so that worked in my favor. Hopefully I'll keep this up over the summer months.
  • Entertainment: Budgeted: $50, Actual Spend: $30. I signed up for a 5k and put the fees here. I probably should have a health category and put the fee for signing up there but since I hardly spend money on health related activities beyond my monthly yoga fee, I couldn't be bothered. I also watched a few movies this month: Hangover & Transformers.
  • Gas: Budgeted: $150, Actual Spend: $103. Typical driving and I am actually getting most of the money back because work is going to pay gas for some work related travel. At the end of last month, I decided to up my overall budget by $50 to accommodate rising gas prices. Looks like I didn't need to but it's probably best I leave in the extra $50 because gas is sure to go up.
  • Groceries: Budgeted: $100, Actual Spend: $50. I didn't starve myself but I did eat a lot of things that I have in storage (i.e. canned beans, frozen pizzas, ect.). It's good because I sometimes forget what I have in my cupboards. I also got invited to lots of family things and as a result got lots of leftovers which helped the cause.
  • Misc: Budgeted: $20, Actual Spend: $100. Sound the alarm, I am majorly over! I bought lots of miscellaneous items for an 'event' that I helped out with and had to purchase lots of last minute things the night before the event that wasn't budgeted for the event and I ended up paying out of my pocket. Is that vague enough for ya?
  • Total Budgeted: $520, Actual Spend: $439!
I upped my budget in June and it looks like I could've stuck with the normal $480 but it's the summer and I want to have fun.

Looking forward, I see spending and lots of it but I am going try my best to stick with the allotted $520 for next month as well.

I am planning on spending a buttload of money (~$100) on makeup at everyday minerals. I currently use their foundation and I am almost out so I am going to place an order. I could live spending about a third of what I am planning on spending but I want to buy an extra foundation as well, a few blushes, their retractable brush and maybe some eyeshadow. I would feel guilty but my last container of foundation lasted me almost a year and what makes me not have a heart attack at spending $100 at one place is that their products don't break me out and I can't say that about too many things. I feel like I am investing in something that I know I'll eventually use up.

I am also planning on taking advantage of the summer weather and doing some day trips here and there (i.e. Niagara falls, some sort of beach, ect.) However, I am going to try my best to plan ahead for these and pack some food for the trip and perhaps even do some baking because why get fast food when you can eat cake!

Am I ready for a house?

Heck to the no! Firstly, I can't afford it. I think if I looked hard enough, I probably could find some property that I could afford with a crazy payment plan that would have me living off instant ramen noodles for the rest of the life. But in reality I can't afford the house I want. I have a friend who is actively looking for a place along with a few other people that have just recently moved into their new houses. I can't help but be jealous because at the end of the day, the thought does cross my mind, especially when I keep hearing about it so much.

It also is one of my financial goals on my list of things to do along with retire & sit on my ass is own house. To make myself feel better I tell myself that all these people with said houses are doing it on a double income and while me and the boy are together we are not quite there so I would definitely be looking at places on my own. So while I entertain the idea from time to time, I push it out of my head till I save enough for a decent downpayment which seems like it will be never...

BBQ Season

The weekend was great till the rain came in on Sunday and it seems like it is still with us a day later. But, the great weather was around long enough to fit in a few bbqs. It's also great because for once, I think I am actually going to come in under budget in the food category! Instead of eating out all the time with my friends, I am fitting a few BBQs with friends instead. Woo!

For those Canadians on the lookout for a veggie burger, check out Presidents Choice Vegetarian Portobello Swiss burgers. I used to be all about the Lick's burgers but this one is way better. I find the Lick's one is great if you want a burger that tastes like you're eating meat but if you're over trying to eat things that taste like meat all the time, then try this one out. My fridge is going to be stocked with these over the summer.

Jojoba oil

I was doing a little organizing of my under sink counter yesterday and found an almost full bottle of Jojoba oil I had bought with the intention of using it on my face. Well it broke my face out a little so it's been sitting under my sink ever since.

I don't want to throw out an almost full bottle out so I've been using using it instead in my hair and to remove mascara. I put it into my hair for a few hours before washing it to condition the hair & I think it's working! Normally my hair gets uber dry during the summer and it's been looking OK so far. Removing mascara is great too because I typically struggle trying to remove it and always end up loosing a lash in the process but with the oil there's been far less casualties.

Jacob Outlet

Yesterday I went by the Jacob outlet on my way home. I guess I was hoping for some summer clothes I can wear to work & offcourse I go to Jacob outlet instead of the real Jacob because they are about the same distance from my house.

The store had lots of great stuff in there including cute summer dresses but not much of a reduction on prices. I tried on about 6 different things and ended up deciding that I either didn't like how it looked on me or I didn't love it enough to spend more than I had hoped.

I ended up walking out of there with a pair of short shorts to sleep in for $6.

Do I have a cavity?

First let me say that I am not a fan of dentists....or doctors for that matter. I guess basically anybody that can inflict pain on you.

I have never had a cavity in my life and I try to keep it that way because of my fear of dentists. I wore braces when I was younger and that wasn't exactly the most pleasant experience. Originally I was supposed to wear it for 2 years max however I ended up wearing it for 3 maybe even 4 years. I don't quite remember.

I brush twice a day & sometimes even three times a day. However I do not floss which I know I should be doing on a regular basis. So over the last few days when I brush my teeth, there's this one damned tooth that stings a little. I also notice that little stinging sensation when I drink cold water. I am wondering if I have got a sensitive tooth or a cavity :( I am going to switch over to Sensodyne and see what that brings me. Hopefully it will go away and I can live happily ever after without having to make a dentist appointment soon.

Spicing things up

This month, I've fallen a little behind in the cooking department. You can probably tell by my lack of grocery spending. I've been eating lots of frozen foods which I am generally not too crazy about.

So to spice things up, I have actually planned out lunches for this week including a new recipe. Coleslaw was on sale for $0.99 at Food Basics, so I am going to try out try out this ramen coleslaw recipe that I had bookmarked forever! I also bought some fresh veggies for pasta so I can use the herbs sitting in my window sill. I bought potted herbs earlier in the summer so I can use what I want as I please. The oregano has died but the basil & parsley are growing strong.

Freebie Fridays

With stores charging for plastic bags, this freebie came at the right time. I can't remember when I signed up for it but this week I received a free reusable bag from Earthbound Farm. It's great for grocery shopping and I already put it in my trunk.

Now I am debating spending some cash and getting one of those bags that fold up into almost nothingness for my purse. It's easy to remember taking reusable bags with you to the grocery store but hard when you're shopping at the mall. I bought something @ The Bay for the bf and felt weird not buying a bag. Who wants to walk around the mall carrying clothes in their hand. I guess I am just not used to it yet. I have no problems walking out of a grocery store struggling to carry all my groceries.

The good news & the bad news

So I googled how to change those little icons that appear beside your website & was able to do it :) Go me! It looks great in FireFox which is my browser of choice. BUT, I tested it out in Internet Explorer and it works however, it looks like half of my first post is blocked off in white space. It has nothing to do with the icon thingamagiggie because even when I remove the code for it, it still doesn't work.

For the life of me, I can't figure out why this is happening. I spent almost an hour looking @ the HTML code & fiddling around with it to no avail. Another reason not to use explorer. I am debating re-uploading the template again this weekend when I have more time :(

*edit: it's fixed! There was an updated version to the template I am using with the fix on it.

The Tube

I am watching some Maury Provich right now. Trashy TV is a guilty pleasure. I remember when I was a young'n and I got to stay home because I was sick, I'd spend the day watching lots of talk shows and The Price Is Right. Remember the days of Ricki Lake, Jenny Jones, Maury Provich and Jerry Springer (but only if my mom wasn't around). Feels a little nostalgic watching it. The topic of the day is sexy makeovers titled Bringing Sexy Back. I love cheesy titles! Ooh, basically everybody is turned into a stripper.

In other t.v. news, has anybody tried to watch Law & Order UK? It's frustrating because I have a hard time following the accent. I'll stick to my Law & Order SVU thank you very much.

What is everybody watching now that most of their t.v. shows are on hiatus. I find I am hardly watching much t.v. now except for the occasional Canada's Next Top Model.

Drinking more water

I have an easy goal for the next two months & that is to drink more water. On a typical day, I drink about 2 cups of water for the whole day. Yup, 2 measly cups when people tout drinking 8 glasses a day. The bf calls me a camel because of how little I drink. We're talking about water here. Alcohol can be a different story ;)

I've been trying to get my skin looking better naturally & I am trying out drinking more water to see if it'll help. I am also taking fish oil capsules & started drinking spearmint tea to control my hormonal acne. I am going to check in a month from now and see how the progress is.

Monday, June 15, 2009

Lunch for tomorrow: CHECK

So I had leftover curried mixed vegetables from eating out over the weekend. There wasn't quite enough for a full meal so I stir fried some veggies and mixed it with the leftovers and voila. A full meal without much effort. In fact I think I added too many vegetables & might even have 2 more meals.

It's really hard when you're cooking for one. I hate using half a vegetable and often times I'll think I have the portions under control and then when I combine everything I've cut into one bowl, I have enough to feed a village. It's a good thing I like my vegetables.

me = careless

I lost my wallet once and the person who found it was nice enough to go through the trouble to call me & let me come to his house & pick it up.

Today I thought I lost my wallet again. Panic struck and I went back frustrated to my car and there it was. It fell out of my purse onto the passenger car seat. I am pretty bad at buttoning up my purse. It has a magnetic button that you can use to sorta/kinda close it. Well I almost never do it. I normally just throw it onto my shoulder and away I go, leaving myself an easy target for anybody looking to pickpocket me. I think I've learned my lesson. I mean what if it fell outside as I was walking outside or what if somebody was looking to break into cars and saw a wallet just sitting there in the passenger seat. It was just screaming, please break into me, you'll get this nice wallet with moneys inside it.

I knew it was going to happen

With the weather getting better, gas prices have gone up to over $1. This means I'll eventually have to up my budget to compensate.

Enjoy the great weather this Friday. I plan to.

MAC Friends & Family sale online from June 16th-18th

MAC Canada is having a friends and family sale online. I think the code is SUMO and you get 25% of all their products online. Shipping is free once you reach $60. On my to get one of these days list is their blacktrack fluidline but there is nothing else I am itching for so instead of getting it online and having to pay for shipping, I am holding off. I probably wouldn't save too much once shipping is factored in anyways.

Normally I'd get something >$60 just so I could get the free shipping, even more so because I missed out on the warehouse sale BUT, I am being a good girl and holding off for now.
